Once you have earned your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) you have the option of adding endorsements. These endorsements are no small feat as it can take drivers years to earn them. Below is a list of endorsements that you can consider.

T – Double and triple trailers: In order to become a certified doubles and triples driver you must complete additional training at trucking school in order to learn how to safely maneuver a vehicle with multiple trailers. This certification is regulated at the state level just like CDLs.

P – Passenger vehicles: Passenger vehicle drivers must be able to safely transport other people. Whether it is a rental car company’s small airport van or a luxury cross-country coach, this endorsement code is required on your CDL if you are moving people, specifically.

S – School buses: When kids are involved there is no doubt that safety is the number one priority. When transporting kids safe conduct is required and state governments are not willing to compromise. If you want to be a school bus driver this is required on your CDL.

N – Tank trucks: Tank truckers are certified to transport liquid goods. In order to earn this certification, you must show that you know how to safely seal your tanker for transport. These certifications are in high demand across the country.

H – Hazardous material (hazmat): This certification is the most difficult one to obtain. This is the only certification that is regulated at the federal level. You must pass a state and federal background check. After this you must complete training that specifically relates to the transport of hazardous material. This training involves the completion of several exams.

The first four endorsements are fairly easy to obtain but a hazmat certification will not only take time but it could also cost you a lot of money. Obtaining a hazmat certification is, without a doubt, expensive but it will qualify you for more desirable jobs with higher pay or better hours.
