To become a truck driver one of the biggest and most important things that you must obtain is a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Obviously driving an eighteen wheeler is different from driving your Honda Civic so the industry requires you to have this special license. Obtaining a CDL is not difficult but it does take some time. For example, you do not just walk into the DMV when you are sixteen and are handed your license. You need a certain amount of practice and experience in order to earn it. The same applies for a CDL, only a bit more complex.

First and foremost, you need to pass the age requirement. Most states allow you to obtain your CDL at the age of 18, but most trucking companies only hire drivers who are 21 years or older so they can drive across state lines. Next, you must get a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). This enables you to practice driving semi-trucks. Some driving schools require you to have a CLP while others include obtaining the permit during the course. After that you must attend a CDL program. This means attending a truck driving school or a community college. Programs typically last somewhere between three to six weeks.

Once you have completed your courses you will then be required to pass a knowledge exam and skills test. The knowledge exam is online and tests what you know about commercial driving based on the CDL manual. The skills test will test you on your knowledge of vehicle inspection, basic controls, and a road test.

After your exams, the last things you will need to do to finalize getting your CDL is providing the necessary documentation, passing a background screen, and undergoing a physical. Once these are all completed you will have your CDL!

Some states have additional requirements and restrictions so be sure to do your research based on which state you choose to earn your CDL from.
