Fuel Saving Tips for Semi-Truck Drivers

Semi-truck drivers are on the road constantly hauling big and heavy things. That is the nature of the job. They drive big engines and pull thousands of pounds of material behind them. That means that gas and diesel costs tend to add up fairly quickly. For any semi-truck driver or fleet company trying to cut down on these costs, here are some fuel-saving tips that you might want to practice.
This might sound odd, but do not overfill your tank. When the tank is filled to capacity, it can expand and overflow when the fuel is heated. The sun can heat gain the tank, or fuel can be heated by the engine and cause overflow when it returns to the tank. Extra fuel will add extra weight which will slow down the vehicle.
Look for ways to improve your truck’s aerodynamics. For example, if your trailer is taller than your tractor, use a roof-mounted cab deflector, a deep angled bumper, or sun visor to deflect the air from your windscreen onto the top of the trailer. Studies have shown that about 50% of a truck’s fuel is consumed for overcoming aerodynamic drag while traveling at highway speeds.
Lastly, avoid idling your truck. Leaving your truck idling when you run a quick errand or idling your truck to maintain the temperature during a cold or hot day is very costly. One hour of idling will burn a gallon of gas. Turn your truck off if you leave it for a while. Doing so is the easiest way to save on fuel costs.
Fuel usage does not need to be a static cost. You can improve your semi-truck’s fuel efficiency and safe tons of money by changing simple things as mentioned above.
