If you are career searching and considering becoming a truck driver this industry certainly is not a bad place to look. There are plenty of opportunities and various different routes you can take (no pun intended). However, like every career choice there are pros and cons that you should take into consideration. Today we are going to look at some of the good things and some of the bad things that come with being a truck driver.
Let us begin with some of the downsides. First off, you will be spending a lot of time away from home. That means that if you have a partner, spouse, or a family you probably will not be seeing them regularly. Secondly, part of the job is being able to deal with weather events on a regular basis. For example, if you decide to take a long haul route then you will face various different weather conditions. You might find yourself in a tropical heatwave one day and the next day be on a slippery snow-packed road. With that said a third thing you have to consider is whether or not you are patient enough to be a truck driver. If you are a self-starter who is independent and patient, then being a truck driver can be a successful experience. If you do not have patience for weather delays, accidents, fueling needs, and problems at the dock, then truck driving probably is not for you.
On the other hand, being a truck driver can also be very rewarding. To begin, truck drivers typically earn a high salary right away. It is one of the few industries today where you can earn a significant salary without even holding a high school diploma or a GED. There is also a lot of job security in the truck driving industry. Just look at 2020. Who do you think was transporting the loads of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, and masks? That is right. Truck drivers. Lastly, one of the greatest things about being a truck driver is that you will get paid to see some amazing things. You will become familiar with numerous cities and get to see a lot of incredible things along the way. This feeling of exploration is something that most jobs cannot offer.
So, if you are thinking about entering the trucking industry by becoming a driver take these things into consideration as they are all part of the job.
