In previous articles we discussed the national shortage of truck drivers. Not much has changed as solving the shortage is not easy. If you are in an industry where you have to try and track down an available freight truck driver, you will see that it is really hard and really expensive to find one. Today we are going to detail what needs to happen to help solve this trucker shortage.

Wages is probably the most obvious fix. Trucking companies need to start offering fair wages. This includes affordable health insurance, a pension plan along with other benefits and incentives to attract experienced and newer truckers to the industry. Just like any other job, a truckers pay has to be worth the sacrifices that are endured or there is absolutely no reason to pursue a career in the industry.

The job also needs to be more appealing. As mentioned in previous articles bring a truck driver is not the most attractive job in the world. Because of this trucking companies need to make it more rewarding for the drivers. Some things that should be considered are better training programs along with apprentice programs to draw in more potential drivers. In short, drivers need to know that this career path is worth it.

Lastly, the best thing that can happen for truckers and the trucking industry is for truck driving to be recognized as a trade. Trucking should be recognized by local, state, and national governments as an official skilled trade with career advancement opportunities. Truckers are without a doubt under appreciated and this needs to be fixed. Doing so will help the shortage and get more truckers on the road.

There has to be a solution to the national trucking shortage and what is stated above is a great place to start. Treat truckers better overall and this problem will be that much closer to being solved.
