The job market is booming as there are more than 160 million people working and 15.7 million jobs open. Offices are empty, companies are competing with one another for staff members, and wages are increasing across the board. Basically, if you want a job it will not be hard to find one. Today we are going to focus on the transferable skills that every truck driver has that makes them competitive in other areas of work.
Truck drivers have a very narrow and specialized set of skills. Truck driving is one of those jobs where their work and in fact their entire lifestyle is very specific to their job title. Many consider switching jobs because of that fact and that is ok! Truth is that truck drivers pick up transferable skills over the years that can be applied to other lines of work. While a lot of the top skills required of drivers are specific to truck driving, there is some crossover with other industries.
For example, truck drivers have knowledge of local traffic regulations, local route knowledge, a clean driving record, impeccable safety history, reporting and documentation experience, vehicle maintenance history, and much more. Soft skills include customer service, empathy, teamwork, flexibility, communication, and problem-solving.
With skills like these truck drivers can find work in travel, construction, automotive, business, manufacturing, real estate, energy, technology, education, and retail. While it might take more work to find that next job in a brand new industry, truck drivers should be able to leverage their current skills into a position within one of the related fields listed above. Regardless of where they want to go next, truck drivers should apply with the knowledge that they are not locked into the transportation industry and there are plenty of other opportunities out there within reach, especially in this high-demand job market.
